Hollywood, California is known for being the center of the American entertainment industry, with many movie studios, famous landmarks, and a bustling nightlife. The famous Hollywood sign was first erected in 1923 as an advertisement for a real estate development called Hollywoodland. The last four letters were removed in 1949. The Hollywood Walk of Fame, which honors celebrities for their contributions to the entertainment industry, was created in 1958. In the 1930s and 1940s, Hollywood was at the forefront of the Golden Age of Hollywood, producing many classic films and launching the careers of many famous actors and actresses. Hollywood has also been the site of several notable movie premieres and award ceremonies, such as the Academy Awards, which have been held at the Dolby Theatre (formerly the Kodak Theatre) since 2002. Hollywood is home to many popular tourist destinations, as well as lesser-known spots that locals enjoy. The TCL Chinese Theatre: A movie theater that features the handprints and footprints of many famous actors and actresses in the concrete outside. Griffith Park: A large urban park that offers hiking trails, a zoo, an observatory, and other attractions. The Hollywood Museum: A museum that showcases the history of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Runyon Canyon Park: A popular hiking spot that offers great views of the city. Amoeba Music: One of the largest independent record stores in the world, with a wide selection of new and used CDs and vinyl records. The Comedy Store: A famous comedy club that has featured many famous comedians over the years.
